The legendary Alpe-Adria-Trail runs for about 750 kilometres through the incredible mountains and past the lakes of the Southern Alps. Beginning at the Grossglockner in Carinthia, Austria, the trail winds over 43 impressive stages to the Adriatic. It passes through three beautiful European countries and connects three regions: Carinthia, Slovenia and the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
If trekking is one of your hobbies or you have always wanted to give it a try, the Alpe-Adria-Trail has many exciting opportunities for you. Relax and recover on the trail’s beautiful long-distance ways. You will be happy you did!
The Alpe-Adria-Trail is perfect for trekking holidays. The trail runs mostly through non-alpine terrain without big differences in altitude. If you are not a super-fit hiker and want to take on just a few stages of the trail, you can enjoy leisurely hiking. Individual routes are well-marked so you can hike in both directions.
The various stages of the trail are of varying lengths. While the shortest stages are just 11 kilometres long, the longest is a whopping 28 kilometres. This longest stage of the Alpe-Adria-Trail takes you into the Italian region from Gradisca d’Isonzo to Duino. Hiking at a leisurely pace, you will need about 7.5 hours for this stage. Shorter stages, such as the beginning of the trail from the foot of Carinthia’s Grossglockner mountain to Heiligenblut, require about 4.5 hours. The highlights of this first stage include the suspension bridge at Sandersee Lake and the Gössnitz waterfall near Heiligenblut.
Every stage offers unforgettable views. Trek past breath-taking waterfalls and through picturesque villages such as Gmünd and Bad Kleinkirchheim. With a little luck, you will see chamois and marmots and enjoy the amazing nature surrounding the trail.
The Alpe-Adria-Trail offers many different options to create a personalised hiking adventure. From one-day trips to multi-day treks, you can book your tour with the Alpe-Adria-Trail booking centre. You can even book shuttle services and luggage transport. This service takes all of your heavy luggage right to your destination, meaning you can enjoy trekking with just a light daypack.
We recommend the three-country round trip if you would like to dedicate a week to long-distance hiking on the Alpe-Adria-Trail.
