Golden Autumn: The Perfect Time to Enjoy a World-Class Hiking Trail

Hiking in the Garden of Eden – from the glacier to the sea. Walk the Alpe-Adria-Trail in Carinthia during the most dazzling time of year: watch the breathtaking landscape slowly turn to gold, and enjoy warm-hearted hospitality and autumnal specialties along the way. The Alpe-Adria-Trail was listed among the World’s Best New Hikes by the renowned National Geographic Traveler magazine in 2016. And the Alpe-Adria-Trail Booking Centre with its excellent range of services is dedicated to making this the most fantastic hiking journey of your life.

Here are the six most glorious autumnal sections of the Alpe-Adria-Trail:

Under the Spell of the Grossglockner (Stage 01 – 02)

Divine peace, crystal-clear mountain air and the glacial landscape around the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain, characterise the entry-point of the Alpe-Adria-Trail in the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Gold Rush (Stage 07 – 08)

Thousands of years ago, people were already drawn to the Hohe Tauern mountains by the prospect of finding gold. Their legacy can still be traced throughout the Moell Valley: proud fortresses, magnificent churches, and powerful sites such as the Danielsberg with its Celtic Sanctuary.

The Artists’ Town of Gmünd (Stage 10 – 11)

The art of being a wanderer: on your hiking journey, take the time to stop off in Gmünd – an enchanting small town with medieval architecture and a lively art scene of museums, galleries and exhibitions

Path of Love  (Stage 12 – 13)

The most romantic section of the trail takes you along the ridge of the Millstätter Alps to the formidable Garnet Gate. Every step of the way is accompanied by unforgettable views:  in the distance, the majestic mountains of the Hohe Tauern National Park, their peaks dusted with the first autumnal snow; and the Millstättersee lake – known as the Jewel of Carinthia – in the valley below.

Nocky Mountains  (Stage 15 – 16)

Glowing colours: the Nockberge Biosphere Park with its gentle, dome-shaped mountains is a remarkable contrast to the glacial landscape of the Hohe Tauern. An autumn hike along this part of the Alpe Adria Trail – surrounded by the changing colours of the mountain pastures and the luminous red hues of the larch forests – is an unforgettable experience.

Still Waters  (Stage 20 – 21)

By autumn, Carinthia’s popular swimming lakes have settled into a meditative calm. Watch as the first rays of sun cast their beams through the morning mist, reflecting off the smooth surface of the Ossiachersee and Wörthersee lakes. Fun fact: Carinthian dialect refers to an Indian Summer as an Old Crones’ Summer.
